PEPPERDINE, Calif. -- The highly touted Sooner recruiting class was on display Friday afternoon as the No. 14 Oklahoma baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 4-3 win at Pepperdine.
Oklahoma fell behind quickly 2-0 behind sophomore pitcher Dillon Overton, but bounced back with two runs in the fourth inning courtesy of a pair of two-out RBI singles by freshman catcher Hunter Lockwood and sophomore Matt Oberste, a junior college transfer from Connors State.
Junior Max
White gave OU its first lead of the season on a RBI groundout in the fifth inning, but the 3-2 lead was quickly extinguished as the Waves countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame.
Overton lasted 4 2/3 innings and kept the Sooners in the game long enough for the bullpen to clinch the victory. Redshirt sophomore
Jordan John (1-0) recorded the victory with 3 1/3 solid innings of relief. John allowed just two hits and zero walks while striking out three Pepperdine batters.
"We want him in the ballgame when the game is on the line," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on John. "He doesn't care if he is the starting pitcher, today he came off the bench and got the win. I thought he did a terrific job of neutralizing their bats, they have a good team. They are going to be tough at home, so we are going to have our hands full over these next two days. No doubt."
In the top of the sixth, the Sooners regained a one-run advantage after junior Garrett Carey, a junior college transfer from McLennan College, drove a two-out single up the middle to score Oberste from second base.
The one-run lead was enough for John to last until the ninth inning where junior Damien Magnifico (Howard College) made his Sooner debut and recorded the save. The hard-throwing right hander struck out his first batter and then placed runners on first and second base.
The threat was ended when Joe Sever lined into a double play that deflected off Magnifico's glove and into the glove of Jack Mayfield, who promptly turned to Caleb Bushyhead at second base to win the contest.
The Sooners won their fourth straight season opener behind the bats of Carey, Lockwood and Oberste, which combined for six of the Sooners' 12 hits on the afternoon.
"You can't say enough about some of the newcomers," added Golloway. "They played like veterans today and helped us get the victory. We are going to have a tough club. Mental toughness had to come into play in game one as we battled from behind today."
The Sooners and Waves continue the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. PT at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The game, along with Sunday's finale, can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network, 1400 AM.
