Chamberlain continued to reward her coach's aptitude for lineup decisions with her fourth home run of the season and three RBIs in a 10-0 five-inning, run-rule win over Virginia Tech Friday at the ACC/Big 12/SEC Challenge.
Michelle Gascoigne remained undefeated in the circle for the Sooners as the junior picked up her third win of the season. Gascoigne struck out six while allowing just two hits in four innings of work before Kirsten Allen took over in the fifth inning, striking out two Hokies.
After hitting three home runs and scoring nine times in Oklahoma's five-game opening weekend, Chamberlain continued to show her prowess at the plate against the Hokies, scoring twice to go along with her home run and three RBIs. Oklahoma got the quick start that every softball team hopes for as Chamberlain led off the game with a walk before moving to second on a sacrifice grounder from Brianna Turang and advancing to third on an illegal pitch. A Jessica Shults RBI sacrifice grounder sent Chamberlain home as OU grabbed an early 1-0 lead over its ACC challengers.
Chamberlain was again involved in the scoring effort in the second inning. After Destinee Martinez singled and stole second base, the sophomore advanced to third while Allee Allen reached first on a throwing error by the Hokie shortstop Bkaye Smith. Freshman Jessica Vest next hit a sacrifice grounder that scored Martinez and moved Allen to second before Chamberlain came up and sent a shot over the left field wall for her fourth home run of the early season and a 4-0 Oklahoma lead.
OU continued to add to their lead in the third when Keilani Ricketts and Brittany Williams picked up back-to-back walks after Shults doubled to lead off the inning. After an illegal pitch scored OU's fifth run of the game, Javen Henson reached first on a fielder's choice that sent home Callie Parsons, who had pinch ran for Ricketts for OU's sixth run.
After an Allee Allen single loaded the bases for a second time, Vest reached on a fielder's choice that sent Williams across the plate before Chamberlain returned to the plate with an RBI sacrifice fly to center, sending Henson home for an eighth run.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Oklahoma returned to the runs column again in the top of the fifth. Vest walked to lead off the inning before advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a Turang single. After Turang stole second, Shults sent a double to center field that scored Vest and Turang. The bottom of the fifth saw Kirsten Allen replace Gascoigne in the circle as she struck out two Virginia Tech batters and forced a third to ground out to short to end the game in five innings.
The Sooners return to action Friday night at 8 p.m. against No. 23 Georgia Tech. On Saturday, OU will face the two SEC programs in the challenge, No. 2 Alabama and Auburn at 12:30 and 3 p.m., respectively.
