NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a three set decision Saturday afternoon against No. 20 Iowa State (12-25, 20-25, 21-25) in McCasland Field House. With the loss, OU drops to 19-9 overall and 8-5 in Big 12 play, while Iowa State improves to 16-7 on the year and 9-3 against Conference opponents.
The matchup marked the ninth ranked opponent of the season for the Sooners, who now to slide to a 2-7 record against AVCA top-25 ranked foes in 2012.
After a 25-12 loss in the opening set, the Sooners bounced back to battle hard in both the second and third. Oklahoma wasn't ready to give-in for the third and final set, as it was a back-and-forth battle between the Cyclones and Sooners with nine tie scores and three different lead changes.
An attack error by Victoria Hurtt, put the final set within reach for OU as it tied the set, 20-20, but Iowa State would string together three straight points before Oklahoma would knock down its final attack courtesy of Morgan Reynolds, for her sixth successful swing of the match.
The bounce-back wasn't enough for the Crimson and Cream, as Iowa State posted back-to-back points to take home the victory, their sixth-straight, and ink their fourth sweep in as many matches.
Sophomore outside hitter Tara Dunn led the Sooners in two separate categories after she totaled eight kills and two blocks on the afternoon. Her performance marked the fourth time that the Poth, Texas, native has led the Sooners in each respective category this year.
Setter Julia Doyle assisted each of Dunn's kills, to total 27 against the Cyclones. In addition to her offensive presence, Doyle also added Oklahoma's lone service ace and another eight digs in Oklahoma's match-up against Iowa State.
Senior libero Maria Fernanda anchored OU's backcourt with a team-high 15 digs against the Cyclones to up her career and program-leading total to 2,106.
In a senior campaign that has seen Fernanda inch closer and closer to the Big 12 career digs record, Fernanda needs just four digs to tie for the No. 2 spot, alongside Baylor's Allison King (2,110; 2008-11), and five to surpass it.
Junior outside hitter Keila Rodriguez teamed up alongside Fernanda in the backcourt with 14 digs against the Cyclones to ink her second double-digit dig performance in as many matches.
The Sooners travel to Lawrence, Kan., for a Nov. 14 showdown against No. 23 Kansas. The match will mark Oklahoma's second ranked opponent in as many matches after facing Iowa State this afternoon. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT in the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
