NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma senior forward Renae Cuellar was named the Big 12 Soccer Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is Cuellar's first Big 12 weekly accolade and is the second for a Sooner this season.
Cuellar scored a goal in each of Oklahoma's two games this past weekend, bringing her season total to nine, the most by any player in the Big 12 this season and tied for the third-most goals in a season in OU history.
"We are delighted that Renae continues to receive recognition for her great work this year," said Oklahoma Head Coach Matt Potter. "Renae continues to deliver in her performance in many ways for our team and we are fortunate to have her as part of our program."
Against No. 17 Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sunday, Cuellar set a Sooner record with 13 shots, breaking the previous record of 11. The senior scored a goal in the 55th minute from 20 yards out to clinch a 1-1 tie against the Cowgirls. Two days before, Cuellar scored early in the first quarter at Texas Tech and finished with three shots overall.
The La Puente, Calif., native also leads the Big 12 with 19 points on the season and has scored five goals in the last eight games for Oklahoma.
Texas Tech's Paige Strahan and Oklahoma State's Adrianna Franch were also honored by the Big 12 this week as the Offensive and Defensiver Player of the Week, respectively.
The Sooners take a break from Big 12 action to play at Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 12 p.m. CT in OU's only game this week.
