NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma soccer's Emily Bowman earned Offensive Player of the Week and Renae Cuellar took Newcomer of the Week honors the Big 12 announced Tuesday. This is the second recognition for Cuellar and first honor for Bowman.
"To receive recognition from the conference for our team endeavor this past week speaks to how we are evolving as a team," said OU coach Matt Potter. "Two solid team performances have been rewarded with some individual accolades. I'm sure both Emily and Renae would be first to acknowledge the play of their teammates in accepting the awards.
Bowman, a sophomore midfielder, played a big part in both of Oklahoma's first two conference wins of the season. She assisted on the game-winning goal against Kansas and scored OU's first goal in its 3-1 win over TCU, helping OU improve to 2-2-2 in Big 12 competition and 5-7-4 overall.
"Emily has been a solid performer all year," Potter continued. "This weekend she took it to new levels and her industry and presence have been rewarded. Emily continues to be a fixture and her play this weekend speaks to our growing confidence as a team."
Cuellar scored two goals over the weekend, both game-winners. Against Kansas, the transfer from Arizona nabbed one goal off of six shots, while she posted 11 shots, four on goal, and one goal in OU's victory over TCU. Cuellar leads the Big 12 in game-winning goals. In conference games, she is atop the league in shots (37), goals (5) and points (10).
"Renae has been a difference maker from day one," Potter said. "The fact that she has been earmarked for attention yet still finds ways to influence the game whether in her play or by scoring goals speaks to the class we have appreciated and known all season. I am delighted she continues to garner awards for her contribution to our team performances."
The Sooners are set to take on West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va., on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. CT. The Mountaineers are currently first in the Big 12 at 5-0-1 in the conference and are 9-3-4 overall.
