NORMAN, Okla. -- The 11th-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team returns to Norman to take on Iowa State on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., and Arizona State on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.

"Against Iowa State I think it is going to be important for our team to pick up some more individual wins," Mark Cody said. "They are going to be a different team than they were last semester. They just wrestled Virginia Tech and beat-up on them. I know Kevin Jackson and he is a very close friend of mine. He is very passionate about coaching and wrestling. So, I know they are going to come in here looking for a win."

In order for the Sooners (8-2, 2-1) to earn their third straight win over the Cyclones (2-9, 0-4), Cody believes his Sooners need to win some battles they lost in their first meeting.

"I'm hopeful we can turn 165 around," Cody explained. "Bubby Graham has lost to him (Andrew Sorenson) twice this year. He lost the dual meet pretty substantially, but at Midlands he only lost by a point. At 184, it's the same thing. We lost to a good, young guy (Boaz Beard) but he is somebody I think we are capable of beating. Then at heavyweight we have a different wrestler in Kyle Colling and I'm hoping he can reverse the loss we sustained to Matt Gibson last time."

The Sooners turn around on Sunday and step out of conference to take on the 5-7 Sun Devils.

"Arizona State is a match we are looking at to improve," Cody continued. "Because we had been on the road for so long this will be the first time that we have actually had some time off and will be rested going into a dual. Now we are really going to find out what we are capable of doing. We need to really focus on scoring points and against them we are looking for major decisions and we are hoping to accomplish that in as many matches as possible against Arizona State.

Oklahoma is 5-1 since the holiday break and is riding a five match win-streak that includes wins over Harvard (28-9), Appalachian State (41-0), Utah Valley (43-0, then-No. 24 Binghamton (20-15) and Navy (26-10).

Following this weekend's action, Cody will embark on his first "Beauty and the Beast" event, which pits the Sooners' wrestling team against Virginia Tech. The wrestlers will compete alongside the 10th-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, who is set to take on 18th-ranked North Carolina State, inside the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m.

MAPLE EARNS TWO BIG 12 ACCOLADES

Redshirt sophomore Kendric Maple was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Month and Big 12 Wrestler of the Week (1/2/12) this season.

He earned his first career conference honor after being named the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Month for his performance in November where he compiled a 6-0 overall record (3-0 dual) at 141 pounds. During that span, he accumulated three victories by major decision and two technical falls.

On Nov. 12, Maple won the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold title after he posted a 3-0 record and defeated Rutgers' 16th-ranked Billy Ashnault by major decision, Army's Connor Hanafee via a technical fall and American's No. 9-ranked Matthew Mariacher, 5-0. After his impressive outing at the tournament, he was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Maple was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 2, after he claimed the 141 pound title at the Midlands Championships. Over the course of the tournament, Maple posted a 6-0 record and defeated the nation's top ranked wrestler in Iowa's Montell Marion, 5-3.

SOONERS TAKE THIRD AT MIDLANDS
The Oklahoma wrestling squad finished third overall and Kendric Maple claimed the 141 pound title and Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2011 Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University, Dec. 29-30.

Oklahoma finished the tournament taking home the third place trophy with 94.5 points. Iowa ran away with the title after tallying 152 points. Northwestern placed second with 105.5 points. Virginia Tech (76.5) and Edinboro (74.5) rounded out the top five.

Leading the way for Oklahoma was redshirt sophomore Kendric Maple who won the 141 pound title to remain unbeaten (12-0) on the year.
