NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma junior libero María Fernanda (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week following her performance at Baylor last Wednesday.
Fernanda was OU's defensive leader in a four-set win at Baylor. She averaged 6.75 digs per set, totaling 27 against the Bears. She had her 24th career match with 20-plus digs and fourth this season. The 27 digs are the third most in the conference in a four-set match this year. It was Fernanda's second highest outing in four-set match this year. She previously had 29 digs at Miami on Sept. 10.
This is Fernanda's first Defensive Player of the Week honor. She previously was named Rookie of the Week on Sept. 20, 2009 and Oct. 5, 2009. Fernanda is the first Sooner to earn the defensive award since Mariana Blum on Sept. 10, 2007.
