The Sooners started off the season with an impressive 5-0 win over Alabama at Birmingham but have dropped two straight games to a pair of tough teams in Tennessee and Oklahoma State.
OU will look to get back to .500 when SMU comes to Norman for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday at John Crain Field.
“My expectations are always for them to bounce back and I think they do a good job of that,” said OU Head Coach Nicole Nelson. “This is No. 6 team in the nation and they are No. 6 in the nation for a reason. They are very difficult to play against. This is a great environment, the fans were great tonight and we had some fans here tonight too.”
The scoreless first half was evenly played with OSU controlling most of the action in the front end, while the Sooners battled back to control most of the action before halftime. OU and OSU were even with six shots apiece after the first 45 minutes.
“Coming out of the first half, equal in shots, I was actually pretty pleased because I didn't feel like we put together our best attack,” said Nelson.
The Cowgirls came out firing in the second half, putting together a trio of scoring chances in the first five minutes. Eventually, the offensive pressure broke down the Sooner defense, which lost starting center back Carrie Whigham early in the second half.
“We had a couple injuries during the game that made us make some adjustments on the fly,” added Nelson. “Overall, I think they handled the night pretty well.”
The Cowgirls' game-winning goal came off a cross from Kristen Kelly in the box that Sarah Brown put away at the 78:26 mark. OSU finished with 17 shots to OU's 10 and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
In the Sooners' goal, Kelsey Devonshire made five saves while her counterpart, Adrianna Franch posted three stops.
The Sooners have not defeated OSU since 2005 and OU will have one more shot at OSU in the regular season on Sept. 30 in Norman. Unlike Friday's loss in Stillwater, the game, which is still over a month away, will count towards the Big 12 standings.
