NORMAN, Okla. - The 2011 Big 12 soccer coaches' preseason poll was released by the conference office on Friday and the Sooners were picked to finish sixth, a year after going 12-8-3 overall (5-4-1 Big 12) and appearing in the program's first NCAA tournament since 2003.
Oklahoma State is the top squad in the 2011 Big 12 preseason soccer poll as voted on by the league's head coaches. OSU received six first-place votes to secure the top spot over Texas A&M, which tallied three first-place nods.
The Sooners were picked 10th a year ago and posted their best finish in the Big 12 standings with a tie for third place. OU returns eight starters from that team, including 2011 Preaseaon All-Big 12 honoree Caitlin Mooney, who was second in scoring for the Sooners last year with seven goals and three assists.
OU was seeded fourth in the Big 12 Championship and advanced past No. 21 Texas and No. 6 Texas A&M to appear in its first title game. The Sooners dropped a heartbreaker in the finals to No. 10 Oklahoma State, 5-4 in penalty kicks. OU led the game after scoring in the second minute and held that advantage until OSU tied things up in the 70th minute. The two were scoreless in both overtime periods before the game was decided in penalty kicks.
The 2011 Sooner soccer team reported to campus last week and already faces its first test this Saturday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game at Arkansas.
The season opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Sooners will play five of their first six games at home, including a matchup with Tennessee on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
