NORMAN, Okla. -- With a number of championship teams and outstanding performances across the board, it certainly was another remarkable year in OU Athletics.

You couldn't have scripted a better ending for the final Big 12 Championship Game, as OU and Nebraska squared off in an epic battle at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. Trailing 17-0 in the second quarter, the Sooners staged a comeback, forcing four turnovers and shutting out the Huskers in the second half to win 23-20. The victory gave Oklahoma its seventh Big 12 title, more than twice as many as any other school, and sent Nebraska packing to the Big 10. OU's women made history at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, taking fourth place for the program's highest finish ever. Brittany Borman (javelin) and Candyce McGrone (100-meter dash) claimed individual titles as Oklahoma crowned nine All-Americans overall. Men's gymnastics senior Steven Legendre collected Oklahoma's nation-leading seventh Nissen-Emery Award, considered the Heisman of college gymnastics. One of the most decorated gymnasts in OU's storied history, Legendre finished his career as a six-time individual national champion and 12-time All-American. For the second straight year, the Sooner women's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Super Six team finals. With a program-record 11 All-Americans, Oklahoma finished in third place overall with a 197.250, the second-highest postseason score in program history. Among OU's other accomplishments in 2011, the Sooners completed their third straight unbeaten regular season and captured their second straight NCAA Regional title. Seven years after appearing in five straight Women's College World Series', OU returned to college softball's grandest stage. Making its 18th straight postseason appearance, the Sooners advanced by winning the Norman Regional and sweeping Arizona in the Super Regional. Though Oklahoma was eliminated in its first two games in Oklahoma City, the Sooners certainly have nothing to hang their heads about. OU finished the season with a 43-19 overall record. In what's become an annual tradition, women's basketball made another run deep into March. Oklahoma defeated James Madison and Miami to advance to its third straight Sweet 16 before falling to eventual national runner-up Notre Dame. OU finished the year with a 23-12 overall record, and All-American Danielle Robinson became just the fourth player in women's college basketball history to total 2,000 points, 700 assists and 300 steals in a career. Led by cross country's fifth-place NCAA finish, its highest ever, and top 20 finishes in both indoor and outdoor track & field, the OU men's program came in fifth in the 2010-11 Program of the Year race. The Sooners collected 10 All-America honors during the course of the year, including four from Mookie Salaam, who won the 200-meter dash title at the NCAA Indoor meet. The Oklahoma men's basketball program turned a new page in April when it hired Lon Kruger as its new head coach. Kruger brings a résumé that includes 13 NCAA tournaments, three Sweet 16s, two Elite Eights and a Final Four to Oklahoma. Following his introduction in Norman on April 4, Kruger got right to work both with his new team and on the recruiting trail, as well as making numerous public appearance. The Sooner volleyball team picked up perhaps its biggest home victory ever, outlasting Tulsa in the NCAA Second Round to advance to the third Sweet 16 in program history. The Sooners set team records in three statistical categories, while Brianne Barker recorded OU's first-ever triple-double in the thrilling five-set win over the Hurricane. The 2010 campaign was a season of firsts for the Sooner soccer team. It's first double-digit win season since 2005, first Big 12 Championship since 2006, and its first-ever appearance in the conference title game. Despite falling to rival Oklahoma State, 5-4, on penalty kicks, OU clinched a spot in the NCAA Championship for just the second time in program history. No. 25 Oklahoma upset No. 5 and top-seeded Baylor at the 2011 Big 12 Championship. With the win, the Sooners advanced to the conference title match for the first time since 1997, where they eventually fell to No. 9 Texas A&M. Oklahoma went on to host an NCAA Regional for the second straight year, while Costin Paval and Ionut Beleleu also competed individually in the national tournament. In just its second season under head coach Ryan Hybl, the OU men's golf squad made significant strides in 2011. Sophomore Abraham Ancer took medalist honors at the NCAA East Regional, and the Sooners placed third overall as a team to secure the program's first NCAA Championship berth since 2006. The Sooner women's tennis team continued its rise as well, advancing to its second straight NCAA Championships and making the second round for just the third time in program history. Oklahoma defeated Cal Poly in the opening round of NCAAs before falling to No. 7 Baylor in the second. Second-year coach Veronique Drouin took the OU women's golf team to new heights in 2011. The Sooners broke records all season long, recording five of the program's six lowest 54-hole scores, and all four of its lowest 18-hole scores. Oklahoma placed in the top five in eight of its 11 tournaments, including two fifth-place finishes, two third-place showing, three second-place finishes and one tournament victory, at the Dale McNamara Invitational. Sophomore Tyler Caldwell advanced to the NCAA finals to headline three Sooner All-Americans (Jarrod Patterson, Zack Bailey) at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The Sooners finished with a 13-2 dual meet record in the final season under head coach Jack Spates. OU's head man for 18 years, Spates finishes his career having coached six national champions, 56 All-Americans and 243 dual meet wins. Mark Cody will take over the program in 2011-12. In just its third season of competition, the Oklahoma rowing team continued to make positive strides in 2011. Following its performance at the San Diego Crew Classic in early April, the Sooners cracked the top 20 rankings for the first time in program history. OU went on to finish second at the Big 12 Championship, and 10 rowers earned national academic honors to complete a successful season on and off the race course for the Sooners. Coming off the program's 10th College World Series appearance, the 2011 season could not have gotten off to a better start for the Sooners. OU began the year 16-0, the best start in program history, to rise to as high as No. 2 in the nation. Unfortunately, Oklahoma could not catch fire again at the end of the season, falling in its first two games of the NCAA Championship.
