Ogle and Smith Help OU Even Bedlam Series

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Tyler Ogle continued his recent success against No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday with two homers and three RBIs as the No. 8 Sooners evened the best-of-three series with a 7-5 win at Redhawks Field.
Ogle tied a career high with four hits on Friday night and drove in three runs after entering the series with eight career games played against the Cowboys and zero runs driven in. He now has six base hits and six RBIs in the last two contests with the Cowboys.
“The past two years, I haven't been very successful against this team, but this year, I think I am seeing the ball a little better and capitalizing when I get my pitch,” said Ogle.
The win ups OU's overall record to 26-9 and 7-6 in Big 12 play while the Cowboys fell to 26-9 and 9-5. It also sets up the eighth rubber match between the two in-state rivals in 15 Big 12 series. OU won the last such meeting in 2010 and is 5-2 in the third and decisive game against OSU.
“I think the way our guys came back and fought today was a character statement,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “More than anything after the game (last night), we told them we were going to focus on one thing and that was play hard. And tonight we did that.”
The Sooners wasted little time putting runs on the board Saturday night with a RBI triple in the first inning to plate Caleb Bushyhead. Tyler Ogle later drove in a Buechele on an error by right fielder Devin Shines, which would have brought home the run on a sacrifice fly if the ball was caught.
Oklahoma State plated one run off OU starter Burch Smith in the first and later tied it in the bottom of the third on Jared Womack's ground out to second base.
Ogle helped OU regain the lead with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning. It was the first of two homers for Ogle on the night, who also blasted a solo shot with two outs in the fifth. Earlier in the fourth inning, Casey Johnson's RBI double and Drew Dahlberg's RBI single gave OU a 5-2 lead.
The second home run by Ogle that gave OU a 6-2 lead eventually chased Cowboys' starter Brad Propst (6-2) out of the game. He finished the fifth and surrendered six earned runs off eight hits. Propst was previously 4-0 in Big 12 play with three runs allowed in 33-plus innings, and his only loss on the year was during the third weekend of the year against Washington State.
The Cowboys battled back in the bottom of the sixth to chase Smith out of the game after he tossed a career-high 11 pitches. The three runs by OSU in the sixth closed the book on Smith and cut the lead down to 6-5.
In the seventh, OU added an insurance run on Caleb Bushyhead's bunt single which also resulted in the Cowboys' second error of the game.
Smith won his fourth straight start to improve to 6-2 with four runs allowed in 5 2/3 innings. He was relieved by freshman Jordan John who allowed one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of relief to set up Ryan Duke for his fourth save of the season.
The series concludes Sunday at 4:05 p.m. in Oklahoma City at Redhawks Field in Bricktown. The game will be carried on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM with Chuck Kelly and Ross Hubbard calling the action. It will also be televised by the Sooner Sports Network on Cox Ch. 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa with Brian Brinkley and Casey Bookout on the call.
