Rubber Match Ends in OSU's Favor in 10th

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Bedlam baseball lived up to its billing this weekend, particularly on Sunday. No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 18 Oklahoma State split the first two games and then changed leads twice in the final three frames on Sunday, as the Cowboys won 11-10 in the 10th inning at Redhawks Field.
The rubber match ended in OSU's favor for the first time since 1999 as OU had won the last four such meetings, including last season. The loss dropped Oklahoma to 26-10 overall and 7-7 in Big 12 play while OSU improved to 27-9 and 10-5.
“Each athlete just kept coming out and doing what they needed to do, to extend the game,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “It just ended up being a great finish to a really-hard fought Bedlam. I've never really not been involved with a harder fought contest both ways. Both teams really played hard. Each game came down to the last inning, last pitch.
“That's one of the better Oklahoma State teams that I've seen in the last four or five years.”
The Sooners held a 7-3 lead headed to the bottom of the eighth with Bobby Shore cruising in relief, but the right hander could not battle out of the frame as OSU plated a combined seven runs off him and closer Ryan Duke (two unearned). By the time Jordan John stopped the bleeding for the Sooners, they trailed 10-7 headed to the top of the ninth.
“If we go back in look, in three years, Ryan Duke has been outstanding in finishing games,” said Golloway. “I can only think of one time, where he didn't. It was at Arkansas, it was two ranked teams playing on the road, and he ended up giving up a home run. I can not think of another time where there was a missed opportunity for a save. He's a warrior, he is going to come back, he's going to fight, he's going to be fine. We are going to be fine.”
In the top of the ninth, OSU closer Chris Marlowe also struggled allowing Tyler Ogle to bring the game within one on a two-run single through the left side of the infield. With the bases loaded, Marlow hit Cameron Seitzer to tie the game at 10 runs apiece. In the bottom of the 10th, Davis Duren provided the go-ahead run with a single up the middle with two outs off Tyson Seng, who fell to 0-1 on the season.
For the second straight game, OU jumped on top first as Garrett Buechele's RBI single to right field gave the Sooners a 1-0 a lead. However, OSU quickly countered in the bottom half of the frame on Zach Johnson's double to the gap in left-center field.
The Sooners regained the lead in the third inning on Evan Mistich's sacrifice fly for a 2-1 advantage. Casey Johnson later pushed the lead to two runs on a double to right center. Johnson's double ended OSU's starter Andrew Heaney's day after just 2 2/3 innings.
The OU offense went back to work with its 10th hit of the day recorded on Cameron Seitzer's RBI single in the fifth. The Sooner lead was upped to 5-1 after a sharply hit ball by Ricky Eisenberg was misplayed at first base by Johnson, allowing Seitzer to score from third.
The bottom half of the fifth marked the end of OU starter Dillon Overton's afternoon. He lasted four innings and faced four batters in the fifth that resulted in two runs off four hits. Overton finished with three allowed off 10 hits in the no-decision.
In the eighth, OU looked to pull away with a pair of RBI doubles by Garrett Buechele and Ogle, but the 17 hits and 10 runs were not enough. It marked the first time in 14 games that the Sooners suffered a loss when scoring 10 or more runs this season.
The weekend series was a monumental one for Ogle, who finished with a .714 batting average, that included 10 base hits, two homers and nine RBIs.
OU begins a five-game home stand next week, featuring a pair of midweek games against Dallas Baptist (April 19) and Bacone College (April 20). The game against Bacone was added to the schedule to make up for the contest lost at Arkansas on March 29. Following the two midweek games, the Sooners return to Big 12 play over the weekend against Nebraska (April 22-24).
