NORMAN, Okla. - The 10th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team scored four runs in the first and sixth innings as the Sooners (17-5) defeated Illinois-Chicago 9-1 in six innings Sunday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. Kirsten Allen (2-0) got her second win of the season, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing the only UIC run. Allee Allen was credited with her first save of the year after throwing the final three innings and holding the Flames to just one hit.
The Sooners got four runs in the bottom of the first without a hit. OU was aided by one UIC error and seven walks. Destinee Martinez, Chana'e Jones, Brittany Williams and Haley Nix all scored with three of the four reaching on walks.
UIC added its only run in the top of the second as Courtney Heeley reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on Teresa Aguilar's walk. Heeley then scored on Melinda Macias' single to left field.
OU answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Jones doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Williams.
After three scoreless innings, the Sooners kept the Flames off the board in the top of the sixth and scored four runs in the bottom to force the run rule. Back-to-back singles from Dani Dobbs and Martinez gave OU two runners aboard with no outs.
Jones hit into a fielder's choice and Williams loaded the bases with single up the middle before Jessica Shults came through with a two-RBI double down the right field line. Nix then doubled down the left field line to score Williams and Shults as OU won its sixth straight, 9-1.
Nix drove in three runs on the day, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Shults' only hit was the double as seven of OU's nine starters got hits on the day. The top half of the batting order accounted for eight of the nine runs with Jones leading the way with three.
Ashley Hewett (3-2) got the loss for the Flames. Hewett allowed four runs on no hits and six walks in just one-third of an inning of work. Devin Miller pitched the final 5.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits. Macias and Heeley each had two hits for UIC.
Oklahoma continues its six-game homestand on Wednesday evening against Tulsa at 6 p.m. CT. The game airs locally on Cox Channel 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
