SAN DIEGO, Calif. –The No. 2 Oklahoma baseball team passed its road test of the season with five straight wins this week away from home. On Sunday, OU posted a 13-5 win at San Diego State to improve to 14-0 on the campaign.
OU's 14-game winning streak is the longest in the Sunny Golloway era and the best since the 1985 Sooners won 19 straight.
“The road presents new challenges for you,” said Golloway. “These games are going to make us better and that's why we scheduled them. We played pretty well against some pretty good teams here on the west coast.”
In the five road games, OU outscored the opposition 33-12 and each of the Sooners' starters collected a hit on Sunday to combine for 20 hits, led by three hits apiece by Garrett Buechele, Chris Ellison and Casey Johnson.
Despite the impressive offensive output, OU initially fell behind 2-0 for the first time in eight games but quickly countered with six runs off seven hits in the top of the second inning.
The scoring in the second started after Johnson's double down the left-field line brought around Cameron Seitzer, who also doubled to lead off the frame. The big blow came from Max White, who plated three runs off his second home run of the year. The three-run blast gave OU a 4-2 lead and was followed by RBI singles by Cale Ellis and Cody Reine.
In the third inning, Evan Mistich gave the Sooners their second home run of the game and a 7-2 lead, as the Panola Junior College transfer led off the frame with a solo shot, his second of the year.
Buechele joined the hit parade in the sixth inning as he belted a two-run double to the gap in right-center field. Buechele, who leads the Big 12 with 23 RBI, has driven in at least two runs in each of the last three games.
Dillon Overton registered his third win of the season with five innings and two runs allowed with four strikeouts. In the four games of the USD Tournament, the Sooners' starting pitching combined for 30 1/3 innings with five earned runs.
On the other side, T.J. Kendzora fell to 1-2 in a short start that featured seven runs (six earned) off 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings. The Sooners have won seven straight over the Aztecs (2-9) and lead the all-time series 9-1.
The Sooners return home to host Arkansas-Little Rock in a three-game series over the weekend (March 11-13). First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Games two and three of the series mark the first of 13 set to be televised by the Sooner Sports Network (Cox Ch. 3 in OKC and Tulsa).
