CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The sixth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team (12-5) closed out action at the Cathedral City Classic Saturday morning with a 4-2 win over Cal Poly. Michelle Gascoigne (4-3) got the win in relief. Gascoigne pitched 3.2 innings without a hit, run or walk as she struck out four.
Starter Allee Allen went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Allen walked one and struck out one.
Cierra Hughes reached on a one-out single through the right side in the first and moved to second on a groundout. Jessica Shults then drew a walk but the two were left on base to end the inning.
In only her second career at-bat, Allen was hit by a pitch in the second inning but was stranded to end the frame. After Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead following the top half of the third, the Sooners responded in the bottom.
Destinee Martinez reached on a bunt single and stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch that granted Brittany Williams ball four. Williams' pinch runner Brianna Turang then stole second to give OU two runners aboard for team RBI leader Shults.
After fouling a pitch off her knee, Shults returned and put the next pitch over the right field wall for her 10th home run of the year to push the Sooners in front 3-2. The long ball brought home RBIs 30, 31 and 32 on the year for Shults, who had 62 a year ago.
OU tacked on an additional run in the sixth. Haley Nix reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to second a sacrifice bunt. Nix then scored as Chana'e Jones reached on an error. Gascoigne retired Cal Poly in order in the seventh to secure the 4-2 win.
Shults ended the game 1-for-2 with the three-run shot. She also drew one walk. Whitley Gerhart led the Mustangs, going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Both Cal Poly runs were scored on sacrifice flies.
Oklahoma travels to North Texas on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. CT contest. Live stats are available at SoonerSports.com.
