NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 5 Oklahoma baseball team defeated William and Mary Sunday afternoon, 13-1, at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners (4-0) swept the series by outscoring the Tribe 42-12 off 51 hits, including seven home runs.
Sunday's win marks the third straight year that OU has opened a campaign with a 4-0 record. Oklahoma posted 21 hits on the day, its most since hitting 27 on March 22, 2009, at Kansas State.
"We had to win in different fashion today, we got to run away," said Oklahoma Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "In the middle games yesterday, we had to work from behind. We were really challenged. I don't know that enough people knew about William and Mary as we did from scouting them. They are a very worthy opponent.
"More importantly, we played to win this weekend. We didn't look at lofty rankings and say `hey, we have to play not to lose.' Anytime you do that, you surely will get beat."
While the offense cruised to the victory, so did freshman left-hander Dillion Overton. The Weatherford, Okla., native carried the Sooners through seven innings on the mound, allowing only one run on four hits. Overton pounded the strike zone early and often and finished 18-for-25 on first-pitch strikes.
"I was really impressed with the way he handled it," said Golloway on the freshman's start. "He's very talented, he was highly drafted last year and again, we are extremely pleased her turned down a Major League Baseball offer to become an Oklahoma Sooner."
The solid start was followed by another strong showing by the Sooner bullpen, which has allowed one earned run off eight hits in 11.2 innings.
All-American Garrett Buechele led OU with four hits, but his three-game streak with a home run ended. Buechele leads OU with a .625 average and three homers after four games.
Junior college transfer Evan Mistich led the Sooners at the plate with four RBIs and a 2-for-5 outing, including his first homer as a Sooner.
"He made a big statement today, but he also made a statement through his workouts," said Golloway on Mistich's performance. "It was no different than Dillon Overton getting the start. He earned it during the fall and the spring. We know one thing about Evan Mistich, he can swing the bat and DH for us at anytime."
Joining Mistich and Buechele on the hit parade were Tyler Ogle (3-for-3, home run), Cameron Seitzer (2-for-4, RBI, double, triple), Chris Ellison (2-for-5, double), Eric Ross (2-for-3, RBI) and Jack Mayfield (2-for-4, RBI).
The Sooners are back in action this Tuesday against Arkansas- Pine Bluff in Norman, the first of a two-game series against the Lions. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. and the game can be heard live on SoonerSports.com. The two will conclude the midweek series on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
