NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 4 Oklahoma baseball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday afternoon, 27-7, at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners improved to 5-0 with a season-high 27 runs, including a school-record six scored by Evan Mistich.
The 27 runs was the most by a Sooner team since scoring 29 at Kansas State on March 22, 2009. OU tied a school record with 14 runs in the eighth inning (14 vs. Emporia State Feb. 17, 1998). OU sent 18 hitters to the plate in the frame and collected 11 hits.
"Our offense was rolling today," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "One thing about our program and our players, we respect the game, we respect our opponent and we respect the new day. Tomorrow will be a new day and the scoreboard will be 0-0. The ball game will be tied and we will have to get after it."
Mistich finished 4-for-4 at the plate and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. The junior college transfer was one of seven Sooners to collect multiple-hit performances on Tuesday.
"He's making the most of his opportunities," said Golloway on Mistich. "We understand that he needs to be in that designated hitter spot. He is pretty good defensively too and is someone that is going to help us this season."
The Sooner offense wasted no time in jumping on the scoreboard first, plating eight runs in the first frame, including a two-run triple by Cody Reine. The first inning was enough to chase Lions' starter Vincent Newton (0-1), who suffered the loss in his second start of the year.
Despite the big lead, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3) battled back with four runs in the third off sophomore Ryan Gibson. Freshman left-hander Cayle Shambaugh relieved Gibson in the fourth inning and picked up his first career victory. Shambaugh (1-0) shut out the Lions with 2.2 innings of work.
In the bottom of third Jack Mayfield extended the Sooners' lead to 11-4 with his first career home run, a three-run shot to left field. In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Jake Smith contributed to the 14-run inning with a three-run homer, also the first of his career (second at-bat).
The Sooners are back in action Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Norman, the second and final game of the series. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. and the game can be heard live on SoonerSports.com.
Left-hander Jordan John (1-0) will be making his first start for Oklahoma opposite the Lions' right-hander William Dunn.
