NORMAN, Okla. -- The fifth-ranked Oklahoma baseball team won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, defeating William and Mary by a score of 13-4.
The Sooners (3-0) overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Tribe in front of a season-best 1,776 fans. OU also rallied in game one on Saturday for a 9-6 victory.
"I thought their starting pitching was really good and kept us off balance," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "We were battled test today. It was a long day. They are a good team. A veteran team."
Oklahoma gained moment in the fifth with a bases-clearing double from junior Erik Ross that brought in three runs and cut the lead down to a run. Ross was 0-for-2 last season with the bases loaded, but came up with the big hit and finished the doubleheader with four hits and four RBIs.
"Sometimes its kind of a struggle to come back from behind but we really keep our poise and come through," said Ross, who finished with a career-high three RBIs. "I was just looking for a pitch to hit. I am not really a guy that is going to pull a ball and hit it over the fence. I was trying to stay within myself and I got a good pitch to hit."
Later in the fifth,
right fielder Cody Reine tied it up with a RBI single and later added a two-run single in the eighth.
In the sixth, the Sooners made their move as
shortstop Cale Ellis put the home team ahead with an RBI single, and Oklahoma did not trail the rest of the way.
The Sooners finished with a game-high 13 hits and 13 runs scored with Reine leading the way with three base knocks. Reine was joined by Max White and Garrett Buechele, who homered in the third straight game, with two hits apiece.
In the mound, junior college transfer Burch Smith made his OU debut and registered nine strikeouts, including the first three batters he faced, but registered a no-decision in the start. Jordan John (1-0), also making his college debut, recorded the win with three shutout innings and three strikeouts.
It marked the second straight game that OU relied on its bullpen to pick up the win. Earlier in the day, Bobby Shore lasted 5.1 innings after giving up five runs on five hits. However, Anthony Collazo picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief while Jack Mayfield earned the save with 2.2 innings of work.
"I am not disappointed in our starting pitching. I thought they pitched well," added Golloway. "There were some balls that were hit hard, give William and Mary credit.
The Sooners return to action tomorrow for the fourth and final game of the series against William and Mary at 11:30 a.m. CT.
OU freshman Dillon Overton will make his Sooner debut against the Tribe's Brett Koehler.
