LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The sixth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team scored a combined nine runs in the final two innings to run past Sam Houston State 12-4 on Saturday morning at the Troy Cox Classic. Jessica Shults hit two home runs and Keilani Ricketts added a third as OU moved to 3-0 at the tournament.
Michelle Gascoigne (3-1) got the win, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out four and did not allow a walk. Kirsten Allen pitched the final inning.
Shults ended the game 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Destinee Martinez drove in two runs, as did Ricketts and Ali Vandever.
Shults put OU up 2-0 early with a two-run shot to left field to score Brianna Turang. OU added a single run in the third when Brittany Williams' double to left center scored Haley Nix, who reached after being hit by a pitch.
After two scoreless innings, OU tacked on five runs in the top of sixth. The Sooners batted around with Nix leading off and ending the inning. Shults hit her second home run of the game, a solo shot to give OU a 4-0 lead. Williams was hit by a pitch and pinch runner Cierra Hughes scored on Ricketts' rocket to center field.
Vandever walked and Dani Dobbs was hit by a pitch before back-to-back singles from Turang and Martinez brought the two home to give OU a 8-1 lead after six.
The Bearkats got three runs in the bottom of the sixth as a sacrifice foul out scored Hailey Wiginton and Taylor Gray hit a two-run home run to left field.
OU answered with four runs in the top of the seventh. Williams was hit by a pinch, Ricketts reached on an error and Chana'e Jones singled to load the bases. Vandever's single to left scored Williams and pinch runner Haley McGregor.
Dobbs reached on an infield single, and pinch hitter Kaci Quintero singled to right center to score Jones. Martinez's sacrifice fly brought home Vandever to push across the final run in the 12-4 win.
Wiginton was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Gray's only hit was the two-run home run. Courtney Schoenemann got the loss, pitching 5.1 innings. She allowed six runs on four hits and walked two. Shelby Lancaster pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Bearkats.
