LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The sixth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team got two home runs each from Jessica Shults and Haley Nix, including one grand slam apiece, as the Sooners (11-1) downed New Mexico State 16-0 in five innings Sunday at the Troy Cox Classic.
Shults ended the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and six runs driven in. In addition to the two home runs, Shults got a single in the fifth. Nix ended the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI.
Katie Norris drove in two runs on a 1-for-3 showing at the plate. Norris' only hit was an RBI double in the fifth. Dani Dobbs scored two runs as did Destinee Martinez as OU out-scored opponents 57-15 at the tournament. Cierra Hughes recorded a double and scored a run in her only at-bat of the weekend.
Keilani Ricketts (5-0) threw a one-hit shutout, allowing no walks and 10 strikeouts. Ricketts went 2-0 on the week with 30 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched.
OU scored at least one run in every inning and scored 10 in the final two to get the run-rule win. New Mexico State committed four errors and used four pitchers. Kelsey Schueler got the loss, allowing six runs in 2.0 innings of work.
Oklahoma returns to action next weekend at the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
