Ikard Earns Academic All-America Honors

December 08, 2011 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma guard Gabe Ikard was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I football team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Thursday. Ikard was named to the second team with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Zoology.

Ikard, one of just three sophomores on the squad, joins nine others on the first and second teams with a GPA of at least 4.0. The Oklahoma City native has been instrumental on an offensive line that has allowed just nine sacks this season.

Ikard began the year starting at left guard before starting seven games at center in the place of an injured Ben Habern. Ikard has since returned to left guard since Habern's return.

Ikard is the fourth Sooner in four years to receive the honor and second straight after Brian Lepak did so in 2010. Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray both earned the achievement in 2008. Ikard is the 25th Sooner overall to be named to the team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
