Sooners Claim Doubles Win

Paval Downs Escobar at Indoor Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Oklahoma junior Costin Paval advanced past the first round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y., while teammate Tsvetan Mihov fell in the opening round. 

Paval, ranked No. 17 nationally, defeated Texas Tech's 11th-ranked Gonzalo Escobar in three sets on Thursday. The Romanian native rallied from a first set setback, 7-6, to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4. The OU standout will face Fresno State's Remi Boutillier on Friday at 11 a.m.

Mihov, who advanced by winning the ITA Central Regional, also went three sets but fell to tenth-ranked Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine. Mihov dropped the first set, 7-5, and won the second, 6-4. Fanselow took the final set, 6-3, to oust the Sooner.
