NORMAN, Okla. – The fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma men's cross country team and junior Jessica Engel are set to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is hosted by Indiana State University and held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. The men's race begins at 11:08 a.m. CT. Engel competes in the women's race at 11:58 a.m. CT.
The men's team returns to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year. OU placed second in the NCAA Midwest Regional to automatically qualify for the national meet. Oklahoma scored 45 points to finish just three points behind in-state rival No. 2 Oklahoma State. Senior Kevin Schwab placed second overall at the regional meet as all seven of Oklahoma's runners earned All-Region honors.
Set to compete for the Sooners at the Championship are Schwab, George Alex, Eric Harasyn, Bill Kogel, Frezer Legesse, Danny Nicolls, Ryan Poland, Aaron Sherf, Jeremy Sudbury and Kevin Williams. Oklahoma has returning experience to the meet as Schwab, Alex, Kogel, Williams and Sherf competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
The Sooners finished a program best fifth at last year's meet, which was also held at the Gibson course.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in the championship meet, as the top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Of the 30 teams competing in the meet, Oklahoma has defeated nine this season, including No. 12 Syracuse, No. 15 Georgetown and No. 16 Villanova.
Engel led the Oklahoma women at the regional meet with a time of 21 minutes, 4.33 seconds to place fifth and earn an individual spot in the women's NCAA Championship.
The first-place finisher will be crowned the 2011 NCAA Champion and first 40 runners to cross the finish line in each race will be named All-Americans.
A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. In addition, highlights from the championships will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show scheduled to air on Saturday, December 18, from noon to 1:00 p.m. CT on CBS HD.
