NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma cross country teams travel to the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Northern Illinois University North 40 course in DeKalb, Ill. The men's 10,000-meter race starts at noon CT, followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at 1:15 p.m. CT.

The top two teams in each race automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.  Individual athletes are also competing for inclusion at the NCAA meet. The top four individuals not on a qualifying team also advance to the national meet.  The top 25 runners in each race are named to the All-Midwest Region team.

The OU men enter the meet ranked No. 5 nationally in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll and No. 2 in the Midwest region.  The Sooners are the defending Midwest Region champions.

Oklahoma State is the only team ranked higher than the Sooners in the region, as OSU is No. 1 in the region and No. 2 nationally.  The field also includes two other nationally ranked teams in No. 18 Minnesota and No. 27 Tulsa.

Oklahoma runners competing in the meet include George Alex, Eric Harasyn, Bill Kogel, Frezer Legesse, Ryan Poland, Kevin Schwab, Aaron Sherf, Jeremy Sudbury and Kevin Williams. Schwab, Alex, Kogel and Williams earned All-Midwest Region honors in 2010 as the Sooners took home their first-ever regional title.

Schwab finished second at last year's regional meet; Alex finished sixth and former Sooner Rob Sorrell ninth to give OU three finishers in the top 10. Other top 25 finishers for Oklahoma last season were Williams (11th) and Kogel (15th).

The Oklahoma women competing in the meet are Kelsey Brown, Natalie Crain, Jessica Engel, Molly Ferguson and Hilary Krein. Ferguson competed in last year's regional, placing 78th, a career-best in two appearances at the regional meet.

Both the men's and women's teams are coming off improved finishes at the Big 12 Championships, as the men placed second and the women finished eighth.  Kogel, Sudbury, Alex, Harasyn, Schwab, Williams and Engel earned All-Big 12 honors.
