NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma baseball program announced the dates for the annual Red/White Series on Monday. The best-of-five set will begin on Monday, Oct. 24 at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman and end on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The series will feature a day off in between games and all game times are to be determined. Game two is set for Wednesday, Oct. 26, game three on Friday, Oct. 28, game four on Sunday, Oct. 30 and game five on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The best-of-five series is free and open to the public. The times and rosters, which will be selected later in the week, will be released on SoonerSports.com and on the official OU baseball twitter page (@OU_Baseball).
Last year, the red squad (pictured above) clinched the series in four games behind solid performances by Burch Smith and Tyler Ogle, who shared the MVP honors.
Both Ogle and Smith were selected, along with nine other Sooners off last year's roster in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. The 11 draftees set a program record and ranked second in the nation behind Vanderbilt with 12. Overall, five seniors (Elliott Blair, Ryan Duke, Michael Rocha, Tyson Seng, Bobby Shore) made up half of the group, while five juniors (Garrett Buechele, Chris Ellison, Tyler Ogle, Cameron Seitzer and Burch Smith) also joined the professional ranks.
Redshirt junior Jordan John, who was taken in the 28th round in 2011 by the Astros, is the lone drafted Sooner to return to Norman for the 2012 season. However, he is one of seven hurlers on the current roster to be drafted by a Major League team. Below is a look at that impressive list, which includes five pitchers from the Sooners' incoming recruiting class that was ranked the fourth best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball:
2011
Jonathan Gray (10th round, New York Yankees)
Adam Choplick (17th round, Arizona Diamondbacks)
Jordan John (28th round, Houston Astros)
Stephen Burgess (30th round, Tampa Bay Rays)
Steven Okert
(33rd round, Milwaukee Brewers)
2010
Jonathan Gray (13th round, Kansas City Royals)
Dillon Overton (26th round, Boston Red Sox)
Steven Okert (43rd round, Milwaukee Brewers)*
2009
Damien Magnifico (5th round, New York Mets)
Not included in the list above is freshman catcher Hunter Lockwood, who was taken in the 17th round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Angels, and freshman infielder Drake Roberts, who was selected
49th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Nationals.
In addition to the strong pitching expected from the Sooners in 2012, the squad returns five starters in the lineup in seniors Caleb Bushyhead (SS), Evan Mistich (2B/1B), Cody Reine (RF) and Erik Ross (CF), and junior left fielder Max White. OU finished last season at 41-19 and made the program's 33rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the Fort Worth Regional.
The 2012 roster also features seven returners in senior Tanner Toal (C), juniors Drew Harrison (1B/DH) and Jack Mayfield (INF/RHP), sophomores Steven Bruce (RHP), Drew Krittenbrink (RHP), Kindle Ladd (RHP) and Jake Smith (C).
