NORMAN, Okla. -- Pitching was again the key in game four as junior hurler Burch Smith led the Red Team to a 3-0 series-clinching victory on Monday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Smith made his second start of the series (started game one) and turned in an impressive performance, showing why the Sooners' coaching staff recruited him away from Howard College. The right hander threw four innings of no-hit baseball and struck out eight batters while walking one.
In the series, Smith struck out 12 batters in 8 2/3 innings and shared the Red/White Series MVP honors with junior Tyler Ogle, who as a team captain led the Red with five hits and three RBIs.
"Burch turned in a dominating performance and put his team in position to win," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "He was effective in both of his starts and Tyler played like a veteran for his team throughout the series."
While Smith struck out five of the first six batters he faced on the afternoon, the offense was paced by sophomore Jack Mayfield and his 3-for-3 outing at the plate.
Mayfield, playing at shortstop, drove in the first run of the game in the first inning on a double down the right-field line. The extra-base hit came after the inning was prolonged with the first of four errors committed by the White Team on the afternoon.
Later in the first, Cameron Seitzer came around to score on a passed ball and in the third inning, he scored again from third base, this time on a wild pitch.
The no-hitter was broken up in the fifth inning with freshman Cale Coshow
on the mound and freshman catcher Jake Smith at the plate. Smith's single to left field was the only hit of the game for the White Team.
Coshow threw two scoreless innings before junior Scott Myers closed out the game with the save.
Monday's win was the second straight for the Red Team, which only dropped game two of the series.
