NORMAN, Okla. - The 17th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team opens the 2011 season Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m., when they host Wichita State inside the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion.
"We are excited about the start of our season against Wichita State," John Roddick said. "The Shockers have a very good program under coach Louderback and are coming off a season in which they won their conference and qualified for the NCAA tournament."
The Sooners are led by senior Ionut Beleleu and reigning All-American Costin Paval. Beleleu, a native of Romania, is ranked No. 26 nationally. Fellow Romanian Paval checks in at No. 57 and Peerakit Siributwong, a newcomer from Thailand, rounds out the rankings at No. 70.
The Sooners have two ranked doubles teams and are led by 24th-ranked Beleleu and Paval. Sophomore Lawrence Formentera and John Warden, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., comprise the No. 38 tandem nationally after a stellar fall campaign.
Following their match against Wichita State the Sooners travel to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Jan. 28-30. Oklahoma will face No. 36 Notre Dame in the opening round.
