Oklahoma's defense was too much for Tulsa as the Sooners rolled to a 28-6 victory. It was OU's first win over the Golden Hurricane in six years. The Sooners extended their winning streak to nine games by outgaining TU, 268-75 yards.

Oklahoma's defense, which entered the game ranked No. 1 against the rush, allowed the Hurricane a mere seven net yards rushing while accounting for a safety in the second quarter. Tom Stidham's offense also had a record day, passing for 188 yards, then a school record.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Sooners get on the board with halfback Otis Rogers' three-yard run. The extra point missed, but on the next play from scrimmage Tulsa quarterback Tommy "Tommy Gun" Thompson fumbled and was swarmed behind his goal line for a safety to give the Sooners an 8-0 lead.

OU's defense stymied Tulsa on the opening drive of the second half, stopping Golden Hurricane ball carriers for losses on the opening two plays. Facing a third-and-22 from its own eight-yard line, TU decided to punt.

Oklahoma lineman John Shirk slapped the kick into the end zone where sophomore tackle Justin Bowers recovered to give the Sooners a 15-0 advantage.

OU added another TD later in the third quarter when Gene Corrotto scampered 25-yards to up the count to 22-0. Reserves scored the final Oklahoma touchdown when Robert "Chief" West threw a 17-yard TD pass to Earl Crowder.

The Golden Hurricane eventually scored following one of the strangest plays in the history of Owen Field.

Maxwell Akers, Tulsa's punter, kicked from his own 29-yard line. Beryl Clark, the Sooner quarterback, attempted to catch the ball on his own 35, but fumbled. Players from both teams gave chase to the 32, but the ball squirted free to the OU 27. Another pileup ensued and the ball went to the 24-yard line, where it popped out again.

Finally George Adams, Tulsa's center, caught up with the elusive pigskin on the Oklahoma 20. TU scored its only touchdown three plays later.

That was the last regular season score for an OU opponent. The Sooners, who gave up just two touchdowns during the regular season, shutout their remaining five opponents and finished with eight shutouts for the season.

Tulsa coach Vic Hurt said, "With power and spirit like they had out there today, I firmly believe they'll win all the rest of their games."

Hurt's prediction was correct as the Sooners went 10-0-0 during the regular season and earned the school's first bowl berth, an Orange Bowl bout with Tennessee.
