Quinton Carter was announced as a member of the 11-player squad today, and was surprised at the announcement by children from the four-year-old class he visits at Norman KinderCare.
“I'm speechless,” said the senior safety from Las Vegas, who received the award during Oklahoma's weekly news conference. “I don't seek recognition for the things I do. I am in a position to give back, so I do.”
Carter has helped teach the children basic reading and writing skills and participated in a variety of activities such as nature walks and recycling programs.
In addition to his work at KinderCare, Carter has served the SOUL Organization, the Oklahoma City Marathon, the University Center for Student Advancement and the OU Black Graduate Student Association.
“Involving ourselves in the lives of others is probably the most important thing any of us can do, and I'm glad that Quinton has shown this initiative,” said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. “We've built something of a legacy here in that area and that's a good challenge for our younger players.”
Sooner players previously named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team included Gerald McCoy in 2008, Nic Harris in 2007 and Jacob Gutierrez in 2006.
Other 2010 team members include Riley Nelson from BYU, Christian Ponder from Florida State, Bryan Morang from Duke, Ben Chappell from Indiana, Kirk Cousins from Michigan State, Adam Kiel from Northern Illinois, Corbin Bryant from Northwestern, Stefan Wisniewski from Penn State, Amara Kamara from Temple and Sam Acho from Texas.
