The loss dropped OU to 3-3-1 overall, while USC improved to 5-1-2.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead right before halftime as Autumn Altamirano scored her first goal of the year in the 39th minute on a header that was chipped over the reach of OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire.
In the 57th minute, USC took a two-goal lead and eventually built a 4-0 advantage before Hampton put OU on the board in the 84th minute after her shot deflected off the crossbar and in. The unassisted goal was the first of the season for Hampton, who entered the game as OU's assist leader with two. She ended the night with a game-high seven shots
Senior Whitney Palmer's three-game streak with a goal ended on Friday. Palmer has scored in three or more straight games on five occasions, including a school-record four consecutive contests in 2009.
Palmer and company had their share of scoring opportunities on Friday at USC, particularly in the first 45 minutes that featured four corner kicks and five shots. The Trojans trailed the Sooners 6-3 in corner kicks after regulation but held a 18-13 advantage in shots (8-5 in shots on goal).
Devonshire, fresh off her eighth career shutout last weekend, allowed four goals in 80-plus minutes in goal and made two saves. OU pressured USC's Shelby Church to make four saves on the night.
USC is 2-0 all-time against OU after winning the only other meeting in the series, a 1-0 decision, played in Norman in 2009.
The California road trip concludes on Sunday at UC Santa Barbara. The Sooners and Gauchos will be meeting for the first time at 3 p.m. CT at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos (3-3-1) hosted Weber State on Friday night.
Sunday's game marks the last non-conference game for OU before Big 12 play begins next weekend. The Sooners will host the start of conference action against Texas Tech (Sept. 24) and Baylor (Sept. 26).
