NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma head women's golf coach Veronique Drouin announced her team's 2010-11 schedule Wednesday. The Sooners will compete in four fall tournaments and six spring events.
OU will participate in various marquee tournaments that feature both tough opponents and highly-respected courses.
“We have a great schedule this year,” said Drouin, who is starting her second year at the helm of the OU program. “We're playing in stronger tournaments. That's going to help the girls see what they need to work on to improve their own individual games.”
The Sooners open their 2010-11 campaign Sept. 11-13 at The Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. Two weeks later (Sept. 24-26), the team will host the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at its home course, the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
OU will make the trip to Columbia, Mo., Oct. 4-5 for the Johnie Imes Invitational. The fall event will give the Sooners an opportunity to play The Club at Old Hawthorne, which is hosting the 2011 Big 12 Championship in April.
“If we can see the golf course four more times it'll help us out a lot in the spring,” remarked Drouin on her scheduling decision. “It will give us a feel for the layout and where we need to hit. It should pay off for us next spring. The tournament also features a good field with a lot of Big 12 teams. It'll be an important tournament for us.”
Drouin's squad will close out the fall season with a second opportunity for Oklahomans to come out and support the Sooners. OU will be competing at the Dale McNamara at The Patriot Golf Club in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament, hosted by the University of Tulsa, will take place Oct. 11-13.
The Sooners resume play in 2011 by competing at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R., Feb. 13-15.
The remainder of OU's spring schedule includes tournaments in Las Vegas, Nev., Tucson, Ariz., Athens, Ga., and Waco, Texas, before the squad returns to Columbia for the Big 12 Championship.
“We have a young team this year, but I think everyone's eager to get out there and play,” said Drouin. “I think they're up for any challenge. They want to be good. We set up this tough schedule for us to get better as a team and as individuals.”
“A lot of the newcomers have played in some big junior tournaments,” added assistant coach Gerrod Chadwell, "so I don't think the marquee tournaments will scare them as much. We'll be prepared every time we go out.”
