Top 10 Sooner Moments of 2009-10

June 11, 2010 | Athletics

NORMAN, Okla. -- What was your favorite Sooner moment in 2009-10?

While baseball and track and field still hope to add to the list, SoonerVision counted down the year's top 10 moments thus far during the latest edition of Sooner Sports Weekly.

Narrowing the list down to only the top 10 moments was no easy task. Each of Oklahoma's programs added to the storied tradition of OU Athletics during the past year.

Following is just a snapshot of some of the most notable team and individual accomplishments:

• Four Oklahoma teams won conference titles (men's gymnastics, women's gymnastics, softball and men's track & field).

• Four programs turned in their best finishes ever (women's gymnastics - 2nd; men's tennis - Elite Eight; women's track & field - 9th; and men's cross country - 12th).

• Three others concluded their seasons ranked in the top five in the nation (men's gymnastics - 3rd; women's basketball - 3rd; and wrestling - 5th).

• Women's basketball made back-to-back Final Four appearancees for the first time in program history.

• Football produced three of the first four players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft and had four first-rounders overall.

• Three Sooners won individual national titles (Ronnie Ash - track & field; Steven Legendre - men's gymnastics; Alex Naddour - men's gymnastics).

• Women's gymnastics senior Hollie Vise was named the Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year.

• A pair of OU softball seniors earned Big 12 player of the year awards (Amber Flores - Player of the Year; Lindsey Vandever - Defensive Player of the Year).

Bill Kogel was named the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year.

• Two student-athletes earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors (Costin Pavel - men's tennis; Karen Shump - women's track & field).

By no means is this a comprehensive list of all of Oklahoma's successes in the past year. A host of other Sooners won individual conference titles, earned All-America honors and were named to all-conference teams.

Additionally, OU's nearly 600 student-athletes combined for a 3.01 grade point average during the fall semester, a program record.

That said, we are reminded once again that there truly is only one Oklahoma.
