The loss was OU's first at home in 12 contests and drops its overall mark to 22-4 and 3-2 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 19-7 and 5-2.
The Longhorns have won six straight games in the all-time series and did so on Friday behind Taylor Jungmann's (3-1) seven strong innings. Yungmann limited OU to four hits and struck out six batters.
The Longhorns took an early 1-0 advantage on Russell Moldenhauer's solo homer in the second inning and built a 3-0 lead after plating two runs in the fifth.
OU's Zach Neal struck out nine batters in the 5 2/3 innings but suffered his first loss of the season with three runs allowed off seven hits. Neal has struck out 20 batters with zero walks in his last two starts.
"I thought it was a well pitched ball game," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "When you think about the wind blowing out the way it is today and both pitchers were doing a good job. Yungmann was good and I thought Zach Neal was real good. It came down to a couple of key hits.
"I think our guys will learn from this. Its a three-game series for a reason and we will remind our guys of that."
Down 3-0, the Sooners turned to reliever Jeremy Erben to hold the Texas offense at bay, but his scoreless streak, which started in the season opener, came to an end after Cameron Rupp's sacrifice fly put Texas ahead 4-0. Erben entered Thursday with the nation's best ERA at 0.35 and his scoreless streak ended after 22 2/3 innings.
Erben allowed just one run in 1 1/3 innings before Jason Chowning took the ball and duplicated his outing with one run surrendered in 1 1/3. Jack Mayfield closed out the night and recorded the final two outs.
Game two on Friday is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch and it will be broadcast on the Sooner Sports Network (KREF 1400 AM) and televised on Cox Channel 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Saturday is Military Appreciation Day and the first 250 fans will receive an OU camo baseball keychain. In addition, the first 500 fans will receive an OU rally towel. For tickets, call 800-456-GoOU.
The series finale is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday and ESPNU will televise the game nationally with Dan McLaughlin (play by play) and Morgan Ensberg (color) providing the commentary.
