OU suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season and dropped to 22-5 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play in front of 2,069 fans at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Texas jumped to 20-7 and 6-2 after claiming the series win in the top 10 match-up for the second straight year.
"I am going tell them (the players) to keep their head up and keep fighting, its baseball and you're going to take the good, and take the bad," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "Again, like I said yesterday, it's a tough pill to swallow but there is a lot of baseball left. Now we have dug a little bit of a hole and you don't want to do that. The key thing in the Big 12 is to not get swept, so we have to come out and fight tomorrow."
The Longhorns took the initial lead for the second consecutive game with Rowe's double down the left-field line. It was Texas' first hit of the game off OU starter Bobby Shore and it plated Russell Moldenhauer and Kevin Lusson, who both walked earlier in the frame.
Shore finished with seven strikeouts and three hits allowed in his seven innings of work, which featured a season-high 122 pitches but it was not enough to avoid his first loss of the year in six starts.
It marked the third time that Shore pitched seven innings but Texas' Cole Green (6-0) matched him with 7 2/3 innings of three-hit ball and six strikeouts. Chance Ruffin pitched for the second straight night and recorded his seventh save of the year.
The bottom of the seventh presented the Sooners with their best scoring opportunity as Garrett Buechele (single) and Cameron Seitzer (fielder's choice/error) reached safely to begin the inning but Green battled out of it with three straight outs.
"They pitched well, don't get me wrong, I am going to tip my cap and say their filling up the zone," added Golloway. "I do think we responded a little bit different. We've been able to hit some pretty good pitching up to this point but it doesn't seem like this weekend we have. I think our guys are trying to do to much and we have to learn from it."
Buechele and Seitzer each had one of the Sooners' three hits on the night, while Chris Eillison also had a single in the third inning.
The series finale is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday and it will be broadcast live on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM. ESPNU will televise the game nationally with Dan McLaughlin (play by play) and Morgan Ensberg (color) providing the commentary.
Saturday is Military Appreciation Day and the first 250 fans will receive an OU camo baseball keychain. In addition, the first 500 fans will receive an OU rally towel. For tickets, call 800-456-GoOU.
