OU (22-3) connected for six home runs in the series and Cameron Seitzer led the way with two of those, which was part of a series that he finished 6-for-8 with six RBIs.
"These games are important and they are games we have to take care of business if you want to be a national seed," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "We like them (midweek games) because our hitters see live pitching and we feel like it really keeps us in stride going into the weekend. Everyone saw how important our success was in the midweek last year in terms of postseason seeding."
Seitzer started the scoring on Wednesday with a two-run double in the first inning. That extra-base hit was immediately followed by Max White's fourth home run of the year as OU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first frame.
The Sooners plated another in the second to give Ryan Gibson (3-2) enough cushion in the predetermined start. Gibson struck out two batters in two innings and allowed one hit and a walk.
In the fourth, Seitzer blasted his team-leading seventh homer of the year to left-center field and pushed the OU advantage to 8-0. Seitzer has hit safely in 13 of the last 14 games with five homers and 18 RBIs.
The scoring continued over the final four frames as OU received a three-run homer by Cody Reine, his first of the year, in the seventh inning and Cale Ellis drove in two runs in the eighth off a RBI single. Ellis finished the midweek series with nine RBIs after driving in seven, the most by a Sooner in 2010, on Tuesday.
The OU bullpen followed Gibson with six scoreless innings up until the ninth, when the final reliever, Michael Whitney, allowed a run in the ninth.
Prior to the final inning, Anthony Collazo (one inning), Drew Verhagen (three innings) and Brandon Bargas (two innings) kept the Lions scoreless.
Next up for the Sooners is the Red River Rivalry, which gets underway on Thursday when No. 7 Texas comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch tomorrow. Game two on Friday is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch and each of the first two games will be broadcast on the Sooner Sports Network (KREF 1400 AM) and televised on Cox Channel 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
The series finale is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday and ESPNU will televise the game nationally with Dan McLaughlin (play by play) and Morgan Ensberg (color) providing the commentary.
"I remember us going into Austin last year and we were No. 1 in the standings at that time and they overtook us," added Golloway. "This year we are both ranked in the top 10 and we are looking forward to a great series and a great atmosphere at L. Dale. I told our guys it's all about opportunity. It's going to be a big weekend in the Big 12 race which we want to go after and win."
