Whigham Completes Action in Spain with U.S.

NORMAN, Okla. -- Carrie Whigham, a 2010 Oklahoma soccer signee, recently finished up play in the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain from Feb. 26-March 6. Whigham and the rest of the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team matched up against players one-year older than them because the tournament format was a U-19 competition.

U.S. head coach Dave Chesler selected Whigham, a defensive captain, along with 17 other players to face Norway, Germany and Sweden. The other teams participating in the competition, which featured three friendly matches for each country, are England, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Italy.

Whigham and the U.S. recorded a 2-1 record as the future Sooner helped the defense allow two goals in the tournament, including a shutout over Germany, 1-0, on March 3. The squad opened with an impressive 3-1 win over Sweden on March 1 and closed out action on March 5 with a 1-0 defeat to Norway.

A native of Ahwatukee-Foothills, Ariz., Whigham, who is expected to contribute for the Sooners immediately in the fall, started all three games for the U.S. in Spain. She has been a part of the U.S. National program since age 15 and was named a NSCAA/adidas Girls Youth All-American in 2009.

The roster of players brought to Spain are not in the core group being prepared by U.S. Under-20 head coach Jill Ellis for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in German this summer, but all the players are eligible for that team. The 15 players on the U-18 roster that were born in 1992 are still age-eligible for the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup, so this tournament will serve as early preparation for that cycle.
