Soccer Announces 2010 Recruiting Class

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma head soccer coach Nicole Nelson announced the signing of 10 athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Feb. 3, for the 2010 season.
The coaching staff handpicked some of the nation's best prep talent from the top club programs across the country, including four Oklahoma products and six hailing from the state of Texas. Highlighting the class are Zoe Dickson (Orange, Calif.) and Carrie Whigham (Ahwatukee-Foothils, Ariz.), two members of the U.S. National program.
Joining the duo in the 2010 incoming class are Bailey Boulware (Oklahoma City), Devan Glover (Amarillo, Texas), Annalisa Hall (Friendswood, Texas), Samantha Howell (Colleyville, Texas), Amy Petrikin (Tulsa, Okla.), Emily Reid (McKinney, Texas), Molly Richey (Tyler, Texas), Camille Sanders (Edmond, Okla.), Kathryn Watson (Richardson, Texas) and Carley Yates (Edmond, Okla.).
"For the second straight season we have recruited a group of athletes that will help make OU soccer a championship caliber program,"said Nelson. "These players are excited to join the OU family and are dedicated to making championships a Sooner soccer tradition. They've competed at some of the highest levels of our sport for their age and that winning tradition will carry over immediately here in Norman.
"This class adds the necessary depth in every position that we have lacked the past couple of years and will create a very competitive environment moving forward. These players will make up a significant core of our team for years to come and I expect they will have a major impact right away."
Dickson started out in the U.S. National team pool at age 15 and has attended numerous camps since. The Orange, Calif., native is ranked No. 78 by TopDrawerSoccer.com for 2010. Dickson is the youngest in the family to attend Oklahoma. Her older sisters, Tiana, a senior on the soccer team and Norrelle, an All-American for the Sooner softball team, both have been key contributors to their respective programs.
"Zoe understands, better than most, the pride that comes with representing the University of Oklahoma," added Nelson. "She is an incredible competitor that is determined to make OU soccer successful on a national scale. She is a sophisticated attacking player and will be a great compliment to the current attacking personalities."
Whigham has also been a part of the U.S. National program since age 15. A 2009 NSCAA/adidas Girls Youth All-American, Whigham's last stint with the U.S. National team came during the U-18 camp held in California in January, her fourth camp in the last year. She is the currently the captain of the U-18 National team and will be competing in international matches during the upcoming months in Spain.
"Carrie has a drive that is second to none and an infectious spirit that will be appreciated by her teammates, coaches and all that work with her," said Nelson. "She embraces the challenge of building a championship program here at OU. Her experience with the national team has prepared her to the match up with some of the best forwards in the nation. We expect her impact as a defender to be significant for our program in the upcoming years."
The 12 members of the 2010 class, and Maryland transfer Caitlin Mooney (Edmond, Okla.), will join an Oklahoma team in the fall that returns 16 letterwinners from the 2009 season, including leading-goal scorer Whitney Palmer. The three-time All-Big 12 forward's 15 goals last year was the best single-season total in school history and ranked eighth in the nation.
The additions of Dickson, Mooney and Whigham give Oklahoma five players with national team experience. Sophomores Dria Hampton (U.S.) and Katharine Nutman (England) round out the group.

She is a teammate of two other signees in the class on a very successful Hurricane '92 Soccer Team and is comfortable playing in a competitive environment. It's nice that we are signing a number of teammates in this class because an on and off the field chemistry already exists. Bailey does a great job running at players with the ball and has the physical attributes to rumble through defenders. She has a sophistication around goal that is unique to players her age."

She is great with her left foot, which is a great attribute in our sport. We expect her to play primarily as a defender but she has the ability to score goals so she could potentially be a forward as well."
