Sophomore captain Garrett Buechele helped plate the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a RBI single and also had a solo homer in the third to pace the Sooners' offense which had 13 hits.
Oklahoma received a solid bullpen effort as senior captain Jeremy Erben tossed four innings and allowed one run for the win, while Ryan Duke recorded the save, the 17th of his career, a mark tied for second all-time at OU with Jarod McAuliff.
"I thought our guys really fought hard and that's what I told them down the line after the game," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway who is 3-2 on opening day at the Sooners' helm. "I thought our guys played really well. We did a lot of things really good, but did a lot of things that were uncharacteristic."
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning on a leadoff walk issued by OU starter Zach Neal, the Sooners rallied to tie things up in the top of the second on Danny Black's line-drive single to center field. The base knock brought around Cameron Seitzer who began the frame with a walk and scored from second base.
Buechele's fifth career home run, a solo shot in the third, was the Sooners' first homer of 2010 and gave OU a 2-1 lead. The Sooners received another long ball from Seitzer in the seventh. The long shot marked the second consecutive season that Seitzer homered on opening day.
Neal, was chased after three innings and left the game after giving up two runs in the third, but struck out five across three innings in his debut. Neal was one of seven OU newcomers to make their debut on Friday which also included Black's two hits, RBI and a run scored.
Erben allowed his one run in the seventh after three straight scoreless frames and was relieved by freshman Brandon Bargas struck out the side in the eighth. Other newcomers, Ricky Eisenberg and Drew Harrison, each had base hits.
The Sooners handed Addison Reed, who converted to the No. 1 starter role after being named the 2009 NCBWA Stopper of the Year, his first loss with four runs allowed on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Reed was one of six Aztec pitchers sent to the mound on Friday night.
In addition to Buechele's two RBIs and runs driven in by Seitzer and Black, Chris Ellison, Tyler Ogle, Caleb Bushyhead also plated runs in the contest. Buechele, Black, Ellison, Seitzer and Kaleb Herren led the way with two hits apiece.
"When you have depth in your dugout, you surely are going to have it in your lineup in the starting nine. We are going to tweak our lineup as we go. We'll figure out who is better in setting the table and who is better in driving in runs, and tonight it was a little bit of everybody."
The Sooners have won its last two season openers and is 37-12 on opening day since 1962.
OU returns to action for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. CT. J.R. Robinson is scheduled to get the start for the Sooners and game two will begin 30 minutes following game one.
