NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma cross country program will run at the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday in Peoria, Ill., on the Newman Golf Course. The women's 6,000 meter race is slated for 11 a.m. CT and the men's 10,000 meter race starts at 12:15 p.m.

The top two teams in each race will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, while individual athletes will also be competing for inclusion at the NCAA meet. The top 25 runners in each will be named to the All-Midwest Region team.

The OU men enter the meet ranked No. 8 nationally according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and No. 2 in the Midwest Region. The only higher-ranked team in the region is Oklahoma State who is No.1 in both rankings. The field also includes two other nationally ranked teams in No. 24 Minnesota and No. 27 Tulsa.

Oklahoma runners traveling to the meet include George Alex, Jacob Boone, Patrick Gomez, Bill Kogel, Alex Muntefering, Kevin Schwab, Aaron Sherf, Rob Sorrell, Jeremy Sudbury and Kevin Williams.

Schwab, Sorrell, Kogel and Sudbury earned All-Midwest Region honors in 2009 as the Sooners placed second, the highest-team finish at an NCAA regional by an Oklahoma men's team.

The men are coming off a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, where Schwab, Alex, Sorrell and Williams earned All-Big 12 honors.

Molly Ferguson and Annie Martin will represent the Oklahoma women's team as they compete individually. Ferguson and Martin both recorded personal best times at the Big 12 Championships and have been the top two finishers for Oklahoma this season.

The two will be looking to secure a spot in the NCAA Championships as an individual. Following the weekend of regional action, the NCAA will select 13 at-large teams from across the nation. After at-large teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships. From those teams not selected in the above process, the top four finishers who finished within the top 25 at each regional are automatically selected.

Complete results and a full recap of the race will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly after the event's conclusion.
