WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team fell to the 25th-ranked Wichita State Shockers, 3-0 [22-25, 22-25, 25-21] on Saturday evening at the Best Western Shocker Classic. The Sooners (5-2) struggled offensively against the Shockers (5-1), committing 23 attack errors.
    
Junior Francie Ekwerekwu led the Sooners with nine kills. Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky added eight. Sophomore setter Brianne Barker recorded another double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Maria Fernanda once again led defensively with 21 digs, and sophomore Danielle Alva had a career-high 12 digs.

Wichita State took an early lead in the opening period, leading 3-1 before the Sooners tied the set at 4-all. After the Shockers broke the 5-5 tie, Wichita State scored the next two points to lead 7-5. The Sooners came right back to within one at 8-7 and tied the set at eight on a kill from sophomore Caitlin Higgins. The two squads traded rallies for six more ties before Oklahoma took a 15-14 lead on a kill from Boulavsky. The Shockers responded tying the set at 16-16 and taking the lead for good at 17-16. Oklahoma was never able to catch up as WSU took the first set, 25-22.

The second set saw the Shockers once again take an early advantage, leading 2-1 before OU tied the set. After trading rallies, Oklahoma took a 5-4 lead on a kill from Ekwerekwu. OU led 8-6 after a Wichita State attack error only to see the Shockers react to tie the set at 9-9. WSU then took a 10-9 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-22.

The Shockers led 5-2 early in the third set before the Sooners stormed back to tie the period at 5-5 on a kill from junior Sarah Freudenrich. After forcing a 9-9 tie, WSU took a 10-9 advantage and scored four of the set's next five points to jump out to a 15-10 lead. After the Shockers went ahead 16-12, Oklahoma answered with a four-point rally to force a WSU timeout. Out of the break, the Shockers regained a two-point advantage and held the momentum to take the set, 25-21 and the match, 3-0.

Oklahoma returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 12 taking on Arkansas-Little Rock and UT-Arlington at the UT-Arlington Invitational.
