NORMAN, Okla. – After dropping the opening set, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team answered back to win 3-1 [21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15] over the Missouri Tigers Saturday morning at McCasland Field House. The Sooners (9-2, 2-0 Big 12) got a season-high 14 kills from junior Francie Ekwerekwu to down the Tigers (8-4, 1-1 Big 12).
“Missouri is a very tough team,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “They're a tough team to compete against. They play great defense and have a strong blocking presence. We didn't play our game the first two sets. We finally started our tempo, and the third set was key. That set could have gone either way, and we won it and took that momentum into the fourth.”
Ekwerekwu added five block assists and hit .323 to lead OU. Sophomore setter Brianne Barker recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 42 assists and 10 digs. Barker had three kills and hit a .400 clip.
Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky added eight kills and three blocks, including one block solo. Senior Bridget Laplante had five kills, 15 digs, one service ace and five total blocks, also including a block solo.
After struggling offensively early, sophomore Caitlin Higgins turned it on in the latter half of the match, finishing with eight kills and 11 digs. Junior Sarah Freudenrich added seven kills with a .33 clip and three total blocks, including a block solo. Freshman Morgan Reynolds had five kills.
Freshman Maria Fernanda led OU defensively with 18 digs, and sophomore Danielle Alva had a career-high three service aces. Freshman Alex Edwards also registered the first service ace of her career.
As a team, Oklahoma had 11 blocks on the afternoon and 62 digs.
Julianna Klein led Missouri with 11 kills and 11 digs. Lei Wang-Francisco had 32 assists and 12 digs. As a team, the Tigers had 10 blocks.
Oklahoma returns to action Wednesday evening, traveling to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a 6:30 p.m. CT contest from the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. Live stats are available at SoonerSports.com.
