NORMAN, Okla. — Head coach Martin Smith announced the 2009 University of Oklahoma cross country signing class Thursday in preparation for the upcoming season. The class of five men and two women covers six states and consists of two junior college transfers from Paradise Valley Community College and five freshmen.
Highlighting the men's group is Alex Muntefering (Parkston, S.D.), who recovered from a severe farming injury in the spring of his sophomore year that resulted in losing half of the big toe on his left foot to emerge as the top distance runner in South Dakota. Muntefering owns five South Dakota state titles.
Another top distance runner that suffered a non-running injury, Bobby Nicolls (Parker, Colo.) had his 2009 track season wiped out by a snow skiing injury, but finished 11th in the 2009 U.S. Junior Cross Country Championships prior to the injury.
Muntefering and Nicolls will be joined by the two PVCC athletes who helped lead their program to the 2008 NJCAA Cross Country Championship. The two, Jeremy Sudbury (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Eric Harasyn (Sierra Vista, Ariz.), have combined for five NJCAA Track and Field All-America honors along with the 2008 XC team title.
Patrick Gomez (Auburn, Ala.) rounds out the group as one of Alabama's top men's distance runners, finishing second in the 800 at the 2009 Alabama State Championships.
On the women's side, Erin Hargens (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the 2008 South Dakota state title in the 1,600-meter run and helped lead her program to the 2008 cross country team title later in the year. Hargens also recorded top-14 finishes in the last two Nike Team National Heartland Regionals.
Hargens will be joined by Colorado distance runner Tati Ogan (Fort Collins, Colo.). Ogan helped lead her program to the team title in the 2008 Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional.
