SoonerSports.com provides a position-by-position preview of the 2009 OU football team. Stay tuned throughout the week as we break down each of the eight major position areas:
NORMAN, Okla. -- Both OU corners were new to full-time starting roles in 2008, but they performed remarkably well and now set up the Sooner defense to be strong on the outside in `09.
Dominique Franks returns at field corner with Brian Jackson working the boundary. Both returners recorded multiple interceptions in 2008.
A pair of freshmen have made the strongest strides in August as redshirt freshman Lamar Harris and true freshman Demontre Hurst look to take over the backup spots at the position. Others in the mix include Jamell Fleming and Jonathan Nelson.
Both safeties, Nic Harris and Lendy Holmes, exhausted their eligibility last season so the Sooners will have new faces on the back end.
Junior Quinton Carter played extensively and is a likely candidate at one of the spots with sophomore Sam Proctor at the other. Carter played in 12 games in 2008, starting two including the Big 12 Championship where he showcased his big-hitting potential.
The safety position is another spot that a true freshman has made the most out of fall camp as Marcus Trice has seen a number of plays with the second-team defense. Others providing depth at the safety spots include true freshman Javon Harris, redshirt freshman Joseph Ibiloye and senior Emmanuel Jones.
The class of incoming defensive backs is strong enough that several other players may find their way onto the field. The list also includes safety Kevin Brent and corner Gabe Lynn.
The physical maturity and overall skill of the newcomers lend themselves to a quick adjustment period.
