NORMAN, Okla. -- The 2009 soccer season gets underway this Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at the OU Soccer Complex. The Sooners will host Missouri State in the first of four games at home to begin the regular season.
On Sunday, Aug. 23, OU welcomes Sam Houston State for "Fans First Day" as all fans in attendance are admitted free.
SoonerSports.com caught up with OU Head Coach Nicole Nelson on Wednesday to discuss the exhibition win over Arkansas last Friday, the play of Jordan White and the practices leading up to the opener. Junior forward Whitney Palmer also spent some time after practice discussing the team's improvement over the last year.
The Sooners held a morning practice session on Aug. 19 after a day of rest on Tuesday following a busy weekend.
After the 1-0 double overtime victory over Arkansas on Friday, the Sooners had a team retreat on Saturday and held the final two-a-day sessions of the preseason on Sunday and Monday.
Coach Nelson said following the exhibition game that the offense was a little too patient and needed to pull the trigger more often. However, the staff was impressed with the possession OU maintained and the combination of passes strung together.
Nelson and company have been working on the offense in practice this week despite creating several scoring opportunities in the exhibition game. The focus of practice since the overtime win has been spreading the field more on offense and stretching out the opposition's defense.
