GAME NOTES
OU is 19-3 at home this season ... The Sooners have lost three Big 12 openers in 2009 (at Kansas State, Texas and Kansas) ... OU leads the all-time series with Kansas, 115-68-1, including a 50-24 mark at home ... KU has won the last two series openers.

NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 9 Oklahoma (33-13 overall, 11-8 Big 12) was unable to overcome a four-run deficit in the first inning on Friday and dropped a 5-4 decision to Kansas (32-15, 11-8) in the series opener at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The series will conclude on Saturday after weather has altered the weekend schedule.  OU and KU will begin a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.  Both games can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network, KOKC 1520 AM.

On Friday, the Sooners fell behind 5-0 after the top of the third but rallied with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth.  However, OU was unable to capitalize late in the game and stranded eight base runners on Friday, including a bases-loaded situation in the seventh.  Both teams connected for eight hits while Kansas stranded 10 base runners.

The visitors took an early 4-0 lead after taking OU starter Andrew Doyle (6-4) deep with a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning.

The Jayhawks extended their lead to five runs off Preston Land's RBIs single in the third inning. Doyle's outing ended in the fourth inning after he walked Brian Heere with two outs.  The start was the shortest of Doyle's career and just the fourth that failed to last at least five innings. He finished with six strikeouts.

“He has been very good for us all year and tonight wasn't his night.  It wasn't our night,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.  “We got off to a bad start. The game came down to fundamentals. And we didn't do a lot of things right.”

Oklahoma countered KU's single run in the third in the bottom half of the frame as J.T. Wise drove in two runs on a single through the left side that extended his hitting streak to six games.

A pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth inning cut Kansas' lead to one.  Kaleb Herren drove in the first run, plating Tyler Ogle and Jamie Johnson followed, scoring Casey Johnson.

That was all OU could muster against Shaeffer Hall (4-4).  The Jayhawk starter lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs off eight hits.

Kansas stranded runners on first and third in the eighth as J.R. Robinson came in to relieve Tyson Seng and end the threat.  Robinson got out of the jam after Seng was effective in his 3 2/2 innings.  Seng allowed just two hits and struck out four in his 13th appearance of the season.

Robinson's perfect 2/3 of an inning was followed by Chase Anderson's perfect ninth.  Anderson is the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and turned in his fourth straight scoreless appearance.

“The bullpen has been good for us all year,” added Golloway. “They kept us in the ball game and we had opportunities to score, but we didn't execute.”

Kansas' relievers were equally effective as four hurlers combined to shut out the Sooners and keep them hitless over the final 3 1/3 frames.

Wise and Matt Harughty led the Sooners with two hits apiece while Tony Thompson paced the KU offense with a game-high three hits.
