NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 9 Oklahoma (33-14 overall, 11-9 Big 12) fell for the second straight game to Kansas on Saturday, 9-5, and lost just its second Big 12 series of the season.

After a four-hour delay due to inclement weather and wet field conditions, the Sooners dropped their third straight conference series to the Jayhawks.

One day after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Sooners gave up another big frame to the Jayhawks (33-15, 12-8) to begin the game.  The opposition went to work early and chased Garrett Richards (6-2) out of the game in the first inning with three runs off three hits, including Tony Thompson's two-run single.

“It's a carbon copy of yesterday's game and what it is, we have seen our club doing some things and fundamentally we've been breaking down,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We built a hole for two days.  A four-run deficit and a three-run deficit. It's never a good sign when your bullpen out pitches the starters in back-to-back games.”

Richards took the loss after allowing the three runs in 2/3 of an inning.  On the opposite side, T.J. Walz improved to 6-1 with six innings of five-hit ball.  Walz walked four batters but limited OU to two runs while striking out five.

Down 3-0, OU battled back in the bottom half of the third on J.T. Wise's double to right-center.  The base hit to the gap scored Casey Johnson, who walked earlier in the frame.  Wise was the Sooners' lone bright spot on offense, providing four of the team's eight hits and extending his hitting streak to seven games.

Matt Harughty helped OU cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the fourth as he deposited his seventh home run of the year over the fence in right field.

Jeremy Erben was solid out of the Sooner bullpen and allowed an unearned run off two hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.  Erben kept OU in the game and struck out five Jayhawks.  The next Sooner reliever, Chase Anderson, was not as lucky.

In the top of the sixth, Kansas took a 4-2 lead on Preston Land's RBI double that dropped into shallow left field.  The base knock brought home Casey Lytle for an unearned run, after he reached third on an errant throw by J.T. Wise on a stolen base attempt.

Anderson got tagged for four of KU”s final five runs after the lead was extended to 8-2 in the top of the eighth.  KU's Buck Afenir led the way with a game-high three RBIs and was joined by Thompson and Land with multiple-RBI performances.

In the bottom half of that frame, OU scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded.  Despite scoring a run on a wild pitch in the situation, the Sooners finished the game 0-for-4 with the bases loaded and stranded 11 base runners overall.

The Jayhawks got another solid outing from their bullpen, anchored by Paul Smyth, who despite giving up two runs in the ninth, earned  his eighth save of the season.

The third and final game of the series is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game will be broadcast live on the Sooner Sports Network, KOKC 1520 AM.
