NORMAN, Okla. -- Garrett Buechele drove in two runs off a career-high four hits and Andrew Doyle won his third straight Friday night start in the Big 12 as the No. 11 Sooners topped Texas Tech, 6-0, during Friday's series opener in front of 1,220 fans at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
After a scoreless first inning, OU scored in each of the next four frames to build a 5-0 lead.
Buechele put the Sooners on the board when he extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. In the fifth inning, Buechele collected his third hit of the game and gave OU a 5-0 lead after another run-scoring single.
That was all the support Doyle would need as he helped Oklahoma (27-7 overall and 7-3 in Big 12 play) post its third shutout of the season as the Sooners' ace lasted eight innings to improve to 5-2.
The Sooners' pitching staff recorded its second consecutive shutout after blanking Wichita State 15-0 on Wednesday. The last time OU shut out consecutive opponents was Feb. 23, 1991 against Wyoming and New Mexico State. In addition, the Sooners have held the opposition scoreless for 24 consecutive innings dating back to the third game of the Missouri series.
Doyle limited Texas Tech (15-21, 6-7) to six hits and three walks while striking out four batters. The junior tossed a career-high 119 pitches in his eighth start in as many chances this season of five or more innings.
“I thought getting the lead (3-0) in the third inning was really big because four out of the first six innings, we allowed the leadoff hitter to get on,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “But Doyle worked his way out of it. I wanted to give him the opportunity to finish the game because he earned it, but ultimately his pitch count got too high. I thought he pitched well.”
After Buechele gave OU a 1-0 lead in the second, the Sooners used their next at-bat to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. Bryant Hernandez drove the ninth pitch of his at-bat through the left side of the infield to plate Matt Harughty and Aaron Baker drove him in with a double off the wall in left.
The Sooners built a 4-0 lead after Harughty's sacrifice fly in the fourth and went up 5-0 after Buechele's RBI single in the fifth.
OU's offense delivered one more blow in the seventh inning on J.T. Wise's Big 12 leading 12th home run of the season. The solo shot to left gave the Sooners a 6-0 lead and marked the Sooners' 60th round tripper of 2009.
While Buechele led OU with four hits and two RBIs, Hernandez, Baker and Wise all connected for two base hits and drove in a run. The Sooners outhit the Red Raiders 13-7.
Brian Cloud (2-3) took the loss for Texas Tech after surrendering five runs off nine hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.
The Sooners and Red Raiders will resume the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Game two is slated to begin 30-40 minutes following game one. Fans who attend the OU football spring game and present their ticket stub at the baseball game will receive $4 admission.
