NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 University of Oklahoma baseball team finished off UCLA on Sunday with a 6-4 victory to complete the three-game series sweep. The Sooners and Bruins each had nine hits during the finale, but OU's six runs in the first three innings proved to be the difference.
Jamie Johnson and Garrett Buechele each drove in a pair of runs to pace the Sooners' offense while Bryant Hernandez, who has hit safely in all but one game this season, connected on the Sooners' other RBI with a single in the second.
The Sooners have won seven of the last eight games, including five straight, and improved to 12-3 overall. UCLA began the season 2-0 and ranked in the top 10, but fell to 2-10 after Sunday's loss.
“Those are going to be three big wins for us down the road when you look towards the postseason,” said OU Head Coach about the series sweep over UCLA. “That (UCLA) is a team that is going to win a lot of ball games. They have a lot of good arms and those were three hard fought, close contests that could have gone either way, but we were fortunate to score the runs and make the plays when we needed to.”
Oklahoma limited Gerrit Cole (1-2) to his shortest outing of the season after three innings of action. The Sooners tagged Cole for six runs, four earned, on nine hits and a walk. In two previous starts, Cole had not given up more than two runs or two hits in an outing.
On the Sooners' mound, Garrett Richards turned in a career day to earn his first win of the season. Richards (1-0) pitched the longest outing of his career in terms of innings (7) and pitches (105) and tied a career best with seven strikeouts. The Bruins scattered their three runs on the Sooners' starter, scoring one in the third, one in the sixth and another in the seventh. Richards allowed seven hits and one walk in his third start of the season.
Chase Anderson relieved Richards in the eighth inning as UCLA closed the gap to 6-4 and Ryan Duke finished off the game in the ninth. After recording saves in game one and two earlier in the weekend, Duke posted his third save in as many days despite allowing a leadoff double.
The extra base hit was the lone base knock allowed by Duke in the series, which saw him record three saves in 3 1/3 innings pitched with no walks and four strikeouts. The last Sooner pitcher to record three saves in three straight days was Will Savage In 2005, then a junior, Savage saved three straight games in the Texas Tech series that finished the regular season for the Sooners.
Oklahoma jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Garrett Buechele drove in his 11th and 12th runs of the season on a double to right field.
The Sooners played station-to-station baseball in the second inning and built a 4-0 advantage. J.T. Wise, Chris Ellison and Matt Harughty, Jamie Johnson and Hernandez each reached on singles to begin the inning. The Sooners plated two runs off the bats of Johnson and Hernandez before Cole could record the first out of the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Sooners regained their four-run advantage after UCLA scored its first run of the game in the top half of the frame. OU benefitted from the lone error in the game to take a 5-1 and then jumped out to five-run lead on Jamie Johnson's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Sooners are 5-0 on the current eight-game home stand and continue the stretch on Monday against Cal. The Sooners and Bears will kick things off at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Live audio and video will be provided for the game on Oklahoma All-Access, SoonerSports.com's premium site.
