NORMAN, Okla. -- Cameron Seitzer's three-run double in the seventh put things out of reach on Monday as No. 15 Oklahoma topped Cal, 9-6, at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners improved to 13-3 with the win and have won sixth straight contests and eight of the last nine. The Bears fell to 8-5 overall. OU has won four straight against Pac 10 opponents and is 6-2 this year against the conference.
“I thought our offense responded nicely today after going down early, 2-0,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Cal is a good team so we feel fortunate to play our fourth straight game in four days and come out with a win. Cameron (Seitzer) had a great day at the plate and Tyson (Seng) was effective out of the bullpen.”
The Sooners fell behind early as starter J.R. Robinson surrendered two solo shots in the first inning. However, the Sooners quickly evened things out in the bottom half of the first as Casey Johnson and Aaron Baker provided a pair of RBI groundouts.
Tied at two runs apiece, OU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second on Chris Ellison's RBI groundout. The Sooners benefitted from another run-scoring ground out in the third inning as Baker collected his second RBI of the game. Seitzer connected on a solo home run to left center field in the third to give OU a 5-2 lead.
After the Bears tacked on another run in the fourth inning with a pair of doubles by Dylan Tonneson and Danny Oh, the teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.
Seitzer's bases-clearing double in the seventh changed the game and ultimately proved to be the difference as Cal scored three runs in the final frame to keep things interesting.
Both teams finished with 11 hits apiece as OU was led by Seitzer (3-for-3, four RBI), Bryant Hernandez (2-for-5), Casey Johnson (3-for-4, RBI) and Ross Hubbard (2-for-4, RBI).
Tyson Seng (2-0) came in after Robinson in the fifth inning and earned his second win of the season. Seng blanked the Bears until the ninth inning and gave up two runs off three hits.
The Bears' starter, Kevin MIller (0-1), was handed the loss after giving up five runs off seven hits in six innings of work.
The OU Athletics Department and the Sooner baseball team announced some schedule changes for the two-game series against Houston Baptist. The second game of the series, which was scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on Wednesday, March 11, has been moved to Tuesday, March 10 as part of a doubleheader with the Huskies. The change was made due to projected inclement weather in the area.
First pitch for game one on Tuesday is slated for 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park while game two of the doubleheader will follow 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
Fans that have purchased tickets for Wednesday's game can present them at Tuesday's doubleheader. Tuesday's games also marks the second $.50 hot dog and coke day of the season at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
