NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's cross country team continued its ascent in the national rankings as it moved up two spots to No. 16 Tuesday in the latest rankings provided by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Rankings (USTFCCCA). The move came after the team became the first in OU history to qualify for the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in last weekend's NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Sooners are currently ranked third among Big 12 schools in the USTFCCCA's top 30, falling behind in-state rival Oklahoma State (No. 2) and Colorado (No. 6). Iowa State comes in at No. 24 and Texas at No. 29. OU is ranked second in the USTFCCCA's Midwest Region behind Oklahoma State.

The Sooners were previously ranked No. 18 going into the NCAA Midwest Regional this past Saturday. The men's second-place finish marked the highest team finish in a NCAA Regional by a Sooner men's team, who knocked off No. 24 Iowa State and No. 30 Minnesota, finishing just behind Big 12 rival, No. 2 Oklahoma State.

Four Sooners claimed All-Midwest Region honors Saturday as sophomore Kevin Schwab, redshirt-freshman Bill Kogel and juniors Rob Sorrell and Jeremy Sudbury each finished in the top 25. Sophomore Kevin Schwab and junior Rob Sorrell's third and fourth-place finishes, mark the first time in school history that two Sooner runners finished among the top-five competitors in the same NCAA Regional.

Up next, the men's team will travel to the 2009 NCAA National Championships, which will be held at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center and hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 23. The men's race will start at 11:00 a.m. CST. A full preview will be available later this week on Soonersports.com.

The 2009 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be broadcast live on VERSUS, marking the third consecutive year the championships will be seen on live television, and the first with VERSUS. A live web stream of the championships will also be available on NCAA.com.
